چکیده

Ground based radial velocity (RV) searches continue to discover exoplanets below Neptune mass down to Earth mass. Furthermore, ground based transit searches now reach milli-mag photometric precision and can discover Neptune size planets around bright stars. These searches will find exoplanets around bright stars anywhere on the sky, their discoveries representing prime science targets for further study due to the proximity and brightness of their host stars. A mission for transit follow-up measurements of these prime targets is currently lacking. The first ESA S-class mission CHEOPS (CHaracterizing ExoPlanet Satellite) will fill this gap. It will perform ultra-high precision photometric monitoring of selected bright target stars almost anywhere on the sky with sufficient precision to detect Earth sized transits. It will be able to detect transits of RV-planets by photometric monitoring if the geometric configuration results in a transit. For Hot Neptunes discovered from the ground, CHEOPS will be able to improve the transit light curve ae-mail: [email protected] ar X iv :1 30 5. 22 70 v1 [ as tr oph .E P] 1 0 M ay 2 01 3

Position angles and coplanarity of multiple systems from transit timing

Aims. We compare the apparent difference in timing of transiting planets (or eclipsing binaries) that are observed from widely separated locations (parallactic delay). Methods. A simple geometrical argument allows us to show that the apparent timing difference also depends on the sky position angle of the planetary (or secondary) orbit, relative to the ecliptic plane. Results. Our calculation o...

The CoRoT exoplanet programme : exploring the gas - giant / terrestrial planet transition

The CoRoT exoplanet programme: exploring the gas-giant/terrestrial planet transition Abstract. CoRoT, which was launched successfully on the 27 th of December 2006, is the first space mission to have the search for planetary transits at the heart of its science programme. It is expected to be able to detect transits of planets with radii down to approximately two Earth radii and periods up to a...

A Cubesat Payload for Exoplanet Detection

The search for undiscovered planets outside the solar system is a scientific topic that is rapidly spreading into the astrophysical and engineering communities. In this framework, the design of an innovative payload to detect exoplanets from a nano-sized space platform, like a 3U cubesat, is presented. The selected detection method is photometric transit, and the payload aims to detect flux dec...

Low False Positive Rate of Kepler Candidates Estimated from a Combination of Spitzer and Follow-up Observations

NASA’s Kepler mission has provided several thousand transiting planet candidates during the four years of its nominal mission, yet only a small subset of these candidates have been confirmed as true planets. Therefore, the most fundamental question about these candidates is the fraction of bona fide planets. Estimating the rate of false positives of the overall Kepler sample is necessary to der...

Exoplanetsat: High Precision Photometry for Exoplanet Transit Detections in a 3u Cubesat

ExoplanetSat is a 3U CubeSat which will detect transiting “superEarth” exoplanets around bright, nearby sun-like stars. The ExoplanetSat prototype will focus on stars with low-mass planets (discovered by radial velocity planetfinding surveys)—planets which are not yet known to transit. No other current ground or space-based mission is capable of observing these systems, one star at at a time, o...
